WHAT IS CRITERIUM RACING
Criterium racing is one of the most exciting
forms of cycling competition to watch. It’s
street circuit racing, usually in city centres,
where riders race for an hour before the final
sprint laps to the finish line. Criteriums can
be team based or individual racing. Criterium
team racing involves between 5-7 riders per
team. In Australia, teams are typically made up
of riders from sports institutes, sponsored
teams or local clubs. European teams often race
in Australia during our summer months.
Large crowds are drawn by the strength, speed,
athleticism and explosive power of the riders –
all of which makes criterium racing a fantastic
spectator sport. The athletes showcase their
superior bike handling skills, racing at speeds
of 50kmh+ and taking corners with breath-taking
precision. The crowds also enjoy the
unpredictable nature of racing and the
strategies and tactics that are such a large
part of team racing. You are guaranteed
spectacular racing, a great family atmosphere
and plenty of thrills and spills.
The Criterium racing calendar gives spectators
the opportunity to watch Australian Tour de
France stars, such as Robbie McEwen, Cadel
Evans, Baden Cooke, Simon Gerrans (just to name
a few), compete with Australia’s rising stars.
